Knowledge about particle size distribution of battery materials improves the battery performance
Lead-acid batteries are part of the standard equipment of many devices and machines. As start-up batteries they are irreplaceable in the automobile industry. They are found in fork lifts, submarines and everywhere else where high surge currents are required in a short amount of time, e.g. to start a combustion engine. Particle size plays a crucial role for capacity and coulomb efficiency of batteries.
The batteries’ two electrodes consist of lead and lead oxide (minium). Lead oxide is produced from metallic lead in two oxidation processes. The subsequent roasting process influences the particle size, which is an indicator for the level of oxidation.
